Located in a former commercial building, this two-level penthouse apartment with its own roof terrace underwent a complete strip-out and redesign. The original building fabric featured a fragmented layout, with no direct connection between the three levels. A new, clearer spatial arrangement establishes a coherent structure, while the installation of a new staircase creates direct access from the lower floor to the roof terrace.

On the lower floor, the private living areas have been reorganized around a family room that extends between the street and the courtyard, serving as the central space. From here, access is provided to the master suite, guest room, and children's room. The entire lower floor has been designed for flexibility, with movable elements allowing for a variety of spatial configurations. The children's area is conceived as a multifunctional space offering numerous possibilities, including a climbing wall, a netted play area, and a swing. Its design also allows for flexible use, for example, by separating the washbasin from the toilet. A dressing room connects the master suite to the master bathroom.

The upper floor has been designed as a loft, defined by a multifunctional rear wall that establishes a clear geometric framework for the space. The sloping roof area concealed behind this wall accommodates a variety of uses, challenging conventional perceptions of an attic apartment. This carefully considered spatial geometry draws the eye towards the continuous glazed façade opposite, allowing the breathtaking views across Berlin's rooftops to be fully appreciated.

The new staircase, which directly connects all three levels, reflects the character of each floor. On the lower floor, it is enclosed and warm in expression, while on the upper floor, a delicate cantilevered steel structure gives it a light, translucent appearance. A new roof opening above the entire stairwell floods the space with natural light, transforming the staircase into a sculptural element. Its lightness, transparency, and zenithal illumination make it the apartment's defining architectural feature.

The material palette is consistent throughout. White, neutral surfaces provide the foundation, creating a striking contrast with the warmth of the timber floorboards, the solidity of large-format natural stone surfaces, and selective copper accents.

In addition, the technical room has been conceived as a playful light installation in collaboration with object designer Sebastian Summa, harmoniously complementing the apartment's overall design concept.
